Veteran all-rounder Shoaib Malik on Tuesday said that he was fit enough to represent Pakistan in the 2023 World Cup but left his place in favour of Pakistan’s young talent.

Malik, who retired from 50-over cricket at the end of the 2019 World Cup, is now only active in T20I format.

At a press conference in Rawalpindi, he claimed that his fitness levels are high enough that he could have been playing 50 over cricket even in 2023 when he would be 41.

"I realised that you can set an example by leaving even if you are fit and in form. The country’s interest is important," he said.

It is pertinent to mention here that Malik had a torrid World Cup campaign in England last year, scoring a mere 8 runs in three outings, which included two ducks.

Regarding his T20 career, he said that he would consider his future near to the World T20 later this year.
