Afghanistan players had to assume the role of chefs due to the unavailability of halal meat at their team hotel in Barbados, West Indies, during the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.

The absence of halal meat, which is a mandatory dietary requirement for them, left them with no option but to cook for themselves or dine out.

The Afghanistan team faced a unique situation on the Caribbean island. In response to this challenge, the players decided to take matters into their own hands.

There was uncertainty about whether the meat available at the hotel in Bridgetown was halal. While halal meat is available on the Caribbean island, it is unclear if all hotels and restaurants include it on their menus.

"Halal meat is not available in our hotel. Sometimes we cook on our own, or sometimes we go out. In the last World Cup In India, everything was perfect. Halal beef is an issue here,” a player told PTI.

"We had it in St. Lucia but it is not there at all venues. A friend arranged it for us, and we cooked on our own," he added.

The scheduling of Super 8s in the T20 World Cup 2024 has been extremely demanding, with teams playing three matches across three different countries. It has posed significant logistical challenges, especially with just one day allocated for travel between crucial must-win matches.

Another member of the Afghanistan team acknowledged that the scheduling had affected their preparations.

"There is uncertainty over flights and training schedules. We are often informed about it at the last minute. We understand that the organisers are doing their best considering logistical challenges, which are bigger in the Caribbean than anywhere else," he said.

Remember, Afghanistan lost their first match of the Super 8 by 47 runs against India at the Kensington Oval in Barbados. They will face Australia on June 23, Sunday.
