Following Pakistan’s poor performance in the T20 World Cup 2024, fast-bowler Usman Shinwari suggested that national team selection should not be based on players' performance in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Shinwari believes that the senior players, like white-ball skipper Babar Azam and pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi, should be rested for matches against lower-ranked side like Ireland and Bangladesh.

He further emphasised that the new players should also be given some opportunity to showcase their skills.

Shinwari also said that Pakistan cricket has been restricted to 15 players.

“The domestic cricketers are forced to leave the country,” he added, saying that the players from domestic cricket must be given chance to play for the national side.

Shinwari’s comments came mainly because of elimination of the Green Shirts from the mega T20 tournament.

The Pakistan cricket team didn’t qualify for the Super Eight, which led to its elimination from the tournament. The team is facing criticism over their poor performance in the group stage matches.

Pakistan were defeated by debutants US by five runs in a Super Over tie and against India by six runs. They managed to win against Canada on June 11 by seven wickets.

Moreover, the match between the USA and Ireland washed out on June 14, the co-hosts secured one point, consequently ending Pakistan’s hopes of proceeding in the tournament.

Pakistan's next assignment is against Bangladesh as their cricket team are scheduled to visit Pakistan in August 2024 for a two-match Test series.
