At the ongoing French Open, Australian tennis player Alex de Minaur reached the quarter-finals but there was a mistake on the Tennis Channel after his win.
The channel said he was the first Aussie to do so since Lleyton Hewitt in 2004, but they skipped the female players, Ash Barty and Sam Stosur.
De Minaur, known as ‘Demon,’ didn’t give up after losing the first set. He played really well and won the next three sets against the former US champion Daniil Medvedev. This win got him to the quarter finals of a Grand Slam tournament for only the second time in his career. He’s the first Aussie male to reach the quarter-finals in French Open since Hewitt in 2004.
Meanwhile, former Australian player Rennae Stubbs reminded the channel that Sam Stosur and Ash Barty, both Australian female players, achieved great things in tennis after 2004.
"HUGE congrats to @alexdeminaur so happy for you mate,” Stubbs wrote on X.
“BUT @TennisChannel Demon is the first Aussie MALE since Hewitt. If u recall @bambamsam30 did this a whole lot of times after 2004. Like finals, semis etc. So can we please get those graphics right. Thanks. Oh and @ashbarty won the whole thing,” she said.
Additionally, De Minaur’s path to the semi-finals looks promising after Novak Djokovic withdrew because of his injury. If he wins against Alexander Zverev, he might be facing Casper Ruud in the semi-finals, a player he has beaten before. Minaur can reach as high as no.6 in the rankings if he wins the tournament.
