Manchester United defeated Manchester City 2-1 in the FA Cup final at England’s iconic Wembley Stadium on Saturday to claim their 13th title and their star attacker, Alejandro Garnacho, matched Cristiano Ronaldo’s record.
Garnacho scored the first goal for Ten Hag’s side in the 30th minute by capitalising on Josko Gvardiol’s mistake. The Red Devils’ lead was soon doubled with Kobbie Mainoo finding the back of the net nine minutes later.
While doing so, Garnacho became the first teenager since Ronaldo to score in an FA Cup final. The Portuguese scored a goal for United in the FA Cup final 2004 against Millwall which the Red Devils won 3-0.
City managed to pull one back with Jeremy Doku scoring in the 87th minute but that was too late as after conceding the goal, United defended deep in their box and managed to halt City’s relentless attacks.
Furthermore, Erik Ten Hag also became the first manager since Jose Mourinho to beat Pep Guardiola in a cup final as the former United manager defeated the Spaniard in the Copa del Rey 2011 final with Real Madrid.
As United have won the title by beating no other than their arch-rivals, it will be interesting to see what their management does with Ten hag as it was reported earlier that regardless of the result of the final, United will part ways with the Dutchman.
Man Utd finished eighth in the Premier League with 60 points and they were set to miss out on European football. Their only chance of playing a UEFA competition next season was by beating Man City in the FA Cup final as the winner of the cup is awarded a place in the UEFA Europa League and they did that.
Prominent names like Thomas Tuchel, and Mauricio Pochettino were linked to the job but it is yet to be seen whether the Red Devils would still search for a new coach or will they continue with Ten Hag.
