Delhi Capitals have suffered a significant setback, as Australia's T20 captain, Mitchell Marsh, will not be returning to India for the rest of IPL 2024 due to an ongoing right hamstring issue, confirmed head coach Ricky Ponting on Monday.
It is understood that the 32-year-old travelled back to Perth on 12th April to seek advice from Cricket Australia's medical team. A decision regarding his comeback to the IPL was postponed to allow him sufficient time for recovery before a reassessment.
"I don't think he'll be coming back," Ponting said. "There's a certain cut off point with replacement players. Cricket Australia were keen to have him at home to start his recovery process and we sent him back as soon as we could.
"They've been managing his rehab for a couple of weeks now. I spoke to him the other day and it seems it's taken a little longer than he first thought to get over it. I don't think the T20 World Cup would be an issue."
Marsh is anticipated to captain Australia in the 2024 T20 World Cup, commencing on 1st June in the USA and the West Indies.
The all-rounder featured in just four matches for Delhi this season, accumulating 61 runs in three innings with a top score of 23. He bowled eight overs, secured one wicket, and maintained an economy rate of 12.87.
This marks the second consecutive season where the Capitals have been deprived of Marsh's contributions midway through. Despite being a high-profile signing at INR 6.5 crore, he appeared in only nine matches for them in 2023.
Meanwhile, Capitals are also contending with the injury to star batsman David Warner, who is undergoing rehabilitation for an injury to his finger on his left hand. He missed the last two games against Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad, but the franchise is hopeful of his swift return.
The Capitals currently occupy the eighth position on the points table with three victories and five defeats. They remain in contention for the playoffs with six matches still to be played.
