Real Madrid have emerged as the favourites to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s manager Xabi Alonso in 2025 as the Spaniard has decided to continue with the German club for one more year, reported ESPN citing anonymous sources on Friday.

Alonso was on the radars of Bayern Munich and Liverpool as both clubs were set to be without a manager after Thomas Tuchel and Jurgen Klopp had announced they would quit once the current season ends.

Despite interest from top clubs across the world, Alonso decided to continue his journey with Leverkusen following an impressive season where his side is still competing in all three tournaments.

Alonso’s Leverkusen is currently competing for the treble as his side has a decisive 10-point lead over Bayern in the league, they are in the DFB Pokal semi-final and will also take on West Ham United in the UEFA Europa League quarter-final.

As per ESPN, Madrid will make a move for Alonso in 2025 and they are confident that the Spaniard will decide to work with them due to their history together.

Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Real Madrid, all of them are Alonso’s former club and him getting linked to them was no surprise. While the Bavarians and The Reds were the favourites to land the Spaniard, Los Blancos were nowhere as they had just announced Carlo Ancelotti’s contract renewal not so long ago.

Earlier, Leverkusen’s CEO Carro confirmed that the club has a contract till 2026 with the Spaniard and they are eager to fulfil that as the German side is planning the next season with the former Real Madrid star.

“He has a contract until 2026 and we are planning the next season with him at full speed,” Carro told MARCA. “Nothing makes us think that he will not continue with us.

“On the coaching level, he is the number one in the world at the moment.”
