Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag referred to MS Dhoni as "buzurg" amid discussions about the catch he held onto during Chennai Super Kings' second home game of IPL 2024 against Gujarat Titans.

The 45-year-old, while speaking on Cricbuzz, praised the remarkable fielding efforts showcased by CSK but made a playful remark about the former CSK skipper, labelling Dhoni as 'buzurg' (elderly).

“Catches win matches. Ajinkya Rahane picked a good catch, so did Rachin Ravindra. The Buzurg (aged) MS Dhoni also picked one,” Sehwag remarked.

Former India all-rounder Rohan Gavaskar, who was also present as co-panellist alongside the ex-Delhi batter, was quick to react. The cricketer-turned-commentator questioned why the 45-year-old didn't label Rahane as an old player. Backing his claims, Sehwag went onto signify the age gap between the two CSK cricketers.

“Their age is not the same. There is a (age) difference and Rahane is also fitter than MS Dhoni. There is a big difference between a 35-year-old and a 42-year-old. MS is getting old now, there is no doubt about it,” Sehwag responded.

MS Dhoni can arguably be considered the face of the Chennai Super Kings, having led the franchise to victory in the IPL trophy a record five times, jointly holding the most wins alongside the Mumbai Indians. In the 2024 edition of the cash-rich league, Dhoni continues to participate, although the captaincy mantle has been passed to Ruturaj Gaikwad, a batter from Maharashtra.

The native of Ranchi has yet to bat in the 17th edition. However, his performance as a wicketkeeper in the clash against the Gujarat Titans garnered attention. Notably, the wicketkeeper-batter dove to his right on the third ball of the eighth over in Gujarat's innings, dismissing Vijay Shankar with a full-stretch catch measuring 2.27 metres off Daryl Mitchell's bowling. Later in the game, experienced batter Ajinkya Rahane also took an impressive catch in the outfield, sending David Miller back to the pavilion.

Meanwhile, CSK has emerged victorious in both of their matches so far, leading the table with 4 points. Following a convincing win against the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the tournament opener, they secured a clinical victory against the 2023 runners-up. Next, Gaikwad & Co. will face the Delhi Capitals in an away game on Sunday, March 31, at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam.
