Australia opening batter David Warner has disclosed the most challenging bowler he has encountered, reminiscing about the Test series against South Africa in 2016/17.

Warner is poised to retire from Test cricket after Australia's third and final Test against Pakistan at the Sydney Cricket Ground on January 3.

Warner singled out former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn as the most formidable opponent he has faced. Steyn concluded his career as South Africa’s leading wicket-taker in Tests, claiming 439 dismissals in 93 matches.

In a presser, Warner cited Steyn as the toughest bowler he has encountered, recalling a specific incident at the WACA. Steyn holds the 10th position for most wickets in Test cricket history.

“Without doubt it's Dale Steyn. I go back to the WACA (the first Test of the 2016-17 home series against South Africa) when me and Shaun Marsh had to go out for an ugly 45-minute session. Shaun came down to me and said, 'I can't pull him so I don't know how we're going to go about facing him'. He put me on my backside and I think he broke his shoulder as well that game,” said Warner.

He went on to call Steyn a fierce competitor, adding that he never gave him an inch on the field. Steyn ended his international career with 439 Test wickets, 196 ODI wickets, and 64 wickets in T20Is.

“He's a fierce competitor who swung the ball back into the left-hander, which is similar to Mitchell Starc swinging the ball back into the right-hander at pace. He was always a fiery customer who never gave you a smile and never gave you an inch or a sniff on the field,” Warner added.

All eyes will be on Warner as he walks out on his home ground to play his final Test match. Australia has already taken a 2-0 lead in the three-match series against Pakistan.
