Australia managed to claim a nail-bitting win over India in the third T20I of the five-match series in Guwahati on Tuesday.
Chasing a challenging target of 223 runs, Australia accomplished the chase on the last ball with five wickets in hand courtesy of Glenn Maxwell's unbeaten 104-run innings, narrowing the series gap to 1-2.
India, batting first, posted a total of 222 runs for the loss of three wickets, owing to Ruturaj Gaikwad's exceptional maiden T20I century as an opener.
Despite Yashasvi Jaiswal's remarkable half-century in the second T20I, he was dismissed early in the game in the second over by Jason Behrendorff, scoring only 6 runs. Ishan Kishan, replacing Jaiswal, was also sent back for a duck.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav and Gaikwad stabilised India's innings with a 57-run partnership for the third wicket. Yadav was dismissed by Aaron Hardie for 39 off 29 balls.
Tilak Verma supported Gaikwad, contributing an unbeaten 31 off 24 deliveries. Gaikwad, the standout performer, accelerated his scoring toward the end, finishing unbeaten at 123 runs from 57 balls, setting India's total at 222 in 20 overs.
Australia, led by Travis Head and Hardie, started aggressively, reaching 47 runs in the first 5 overs. However, Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh removed Hardie for 16 runs from 12 balls.
Head departed after scoring 35 runs off 18 deliveries, followed by Josh Inglis falling to spinner Ravi Bishnoi.
Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis formed a crucial 60-run partnership before Stoinis departed for 17 off 21 balls to Axar Patel. Tim David was dismissed for a duck by Bishnoi.
At 134 for 5, with skipper Matthew Wade arriving, the game favoured India. Nevertheless, the Australians turned the game around.
Wade and Maxwell persevered, guiding Australia to victory, with Maxwell's unbeaten 104 off 48 balls steering them to clinch the match and bring the series score to 1-2.
Maxwell claimed two records with the century. He now have the record for joint-most T20I centuries (4) with Rohit Sharma and joint-fastest T20I century for Australia (47 balls)
