Xabi Alonso has turned German football club Bayer Leverkusen into a force to reckon with as they have now equalled Pep Guardiola's Bayern Munich record of having the perfect start in the Bundesliga.

Alonso, who has played for top clubs like Liverpool, Real Madrid and Munich, has developed a consistent playing football for his side as in 17 games played this season, they are yet to taste a defeat.

Leverkusen have 31 points from the possible 33 in the Bundesliga so far, the same as Guardiola's Munich in the 2015-16 season.

With a 4-0 win over Union Berlin on Sunday (November 12), they maintained their position on top of the table with 31 points, two more than Thomas Tuchel's side.

"The feeling is great at the moment," said former Spain and Liverpool midfielder Alonso.

"We have played with a lot of focus and concentration. But there are still a lot of matches and a lot can happen in football and suddenly all expectations are gone."

Leverkusen have now won 16 out of 17 matches this season and they scored 59 goals and conceded only 14 in the process.

The fight for the top spot in Germany's top-flight football continues between Leverkusen and Munich and a loss for either team can make things much greater for the other one.

The two sides last met in a four-goal thriller on September 15 which ended in a 2-2 draw at the Allianz Arena. Their next match against one another is scheduled for February 10, 2024, at Leverkusen's home.

It must be noted Alonso was appointed as the head coach in October 2022 when Leverkusen were ranked 18th in the points table, they finished sixth the same season and also played in the UEFA Europa League semi-final.

It is also worth mentioning that this is the first time Alonso is managing a club in the first division as his previous coaching experience has been with Real Sociedad's B team, which he managed for three years.
