Former Real Madrid and Arsenal attacking midfielder Mesut Ozil named his UEFA Champions League (UCL) dream team of the 2023-24 season as the biggest club competition gets underway once again on Tuesday.
This year’s UCL will see Arsenal making a comeback in the competition after seven years as the Gunners will take on the Dutch club PSV at The Emirates Stadium.
Manchester City will look forward to defending their title and becoming the second team to win the Champions League back-to-back after Real Madrid.
Ozil, who spent his peak years at Madrid and Arsenal, named 11 players whom he thinks will make be the best players in the Champions League this season.
The German’s team included Arsenal’s star Bukayo Saka who scored 14 goals and provided 11 assists last season.
The 34-year-old’s team also included Manchester City’s trio of Rodri — who scored the winning goal in the UCL final this year — Erling Haaland and Ruben Dias.
Two players were included from the 14-time UCL winners, namely Eduardo Camavinga and Antonio Rudiger.
However, there were two interesting picks by the German international. He named his former teammate Sergio Ramos and midfielder Ivan Rakitic in his dream team.
Mesut Ozil’s Dream Team: Manuel Neuer (gk); Ruben Dias, Sergio Ramos, Antonio Rudiger; Eduardo Camavinga, Rodri, Ivan Rakitic; Leroy Sane, Bukayo Saka; Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland.
It must be noted that Ozil is considered one of the best players during his peak. The attacking midfielder built a fearsome partnership with Cristiano Ronaldo during his days with Real Madrid.
He was also part of the Madrid’s squad that created history and won La Liga with 100 points.
Other than that, the 34-year-old has won the FIFA World Cup 2014 with the German national football team.
