Barcelona's sporting director, Deco, has provided confirmation that the club's head coach, Xavi Hernandez, is on the verge of securing a contract extension with the Catalan giants.

Deco, the former Barcelona and Chelsea midfielder, assumed the role of sporting director just last month on a three-year contract, taking over from Mateu Alemany.

In his statement to the press, Deco expressed his satisfaction with the work being carried out by his former teammate, Xavi, stating, "Xavi will sign a new deal, he deserves to extend the contract. How many years? You will see soon, but we really trust Xavi for the future."

Deco, who himself won the Champions League during his playing days with Porto, also disclosed that the club is diligently working on securing new contracts for the promising Spanish internationals Alejandro Balde and Lamine Yamal.

"The two renewals of Alejandro Balde and Lamine Yamal are already on track, we will have both signing new deals. You will surely have news in the coming days,” he said.

On the other hand, Deco also shed light on Joao Felix and Cancelo loan deals.

“There’s no buy option in both Joao Felix and Cancelo deals — one year loan. If they perform at good level, we will try to keep them at the club. We will be on it, this is not something being discussed today,” he said.

Xavi, a legend of Barcelona both as a player and now as a coach, returned to the club in 2021, taking over from Ronald Koeman.

During his first full season in charge last year, Xavi played a pivotal role in guiding Barcelona to their first La Liga title in four years. His return followed a six-year stint in Qatar with Al Sadd, where he achieved success both as a player and a manager, winning the Stars League.
