Former Australian pacer Geoff Lawson talked about Pakistan’s chances at the Cricket World Cup 2023 which will be held in India in October.

Lawson, 65, stated that playing under the conditions of the sub-continent would be very beneficial for Pakistan and they are certain to play the semi-final at least.

“This World Cup will be very close, there is no clear favourite,” Lawson said while talking to Geo News. “Four to five teams who are playing well are the favourites. Pakistan’s chances are bright, playing under sub-continent conditions will be useful for them, and I think they will play the semi-final.”

“Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah have so much pace. They have so much experience and variety which is going to be very beneficial for Pakistan,” Lawson said on Pakistan’s bowling attack.

The 65-year-old, just like everyone in the cricket world, is also a big fan of Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam.

“Babar is one of the best players in the world. He is always trying to improve himself every time he comes to bat. He is also getting very good at captaincy. Mohammad Rizwan is also very capable and I guess Pakistan have the required spinners as well [who can bowl in Indian conditions].”

Lawson visited the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore where he participated in the age group coaching camp where he appreciated the talent Pakistan has and also admitted that after Australia, Pakistan is his favourite team.

“I feel good after working with these guys. Especially U13 kids, they have exceptional talent.

“After Australia, Pakistan is the second team that I follow. I am always looking at how they are going to proceed, who are the players, who is the coaching staff. Players from my time have become coaches, out of all, Misbah is the most successful.”

It must be noted that Lawson represented Australia in 46 Tests and 79 ODIs. He also coached Pakistan Cricket Team from 2007 to 2008.
