Former South African batter Herschelle Gibbs declared Pakistan as one of the favourites to win the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 which will be played in India.

Gibbs, 49, is currently participating in the U13 and U16 coaching programme in the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Lahore.

While talking to Geo News, Gibbs said that Pakistan will certainly reach the top four in the Cricket World Cup because the conditions will suit them.

"Pakistan is among the favourite teams to win the World Cup. Yes, they are a bit inconsistent, but everyone knows how this team can click on match days. They have the X-factor and that is what makes them dangerous," Gibbs said. “The conditions are also favourable to Pakistan, they will be in the top four.”

Gibbs also stated that he is a fan of Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam and has worked with him during the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

“Babar knows how to score runs with consistency, which, if you ask me is unbelievable. His temperament is excellent. It does not matter how many runs he scores, he is never satisfied,” he said. “It is often said that he cannot score runs quick enough, but I think he knows how to improve strike rate and I’m sure he can sacrifice some runs for strike rate.

“I will discuss some ideas with him but whatever you say, he is one of the best batsmen in the world.”

The South African also talked about the strengths and weaknesses of Asian batters and how his visit to Pakistan has been going.

“I think Asian batters are far better at the front foot than back foot. This mindset should be changed. The coaches in Pakistan should tell their batters about it. Unfortunately, there is not enough time, because I wanted to work with U19 as well.

“I am very happy to come here. It feels like I have never left Lahore, everything is the same. Sometimes I think I am still a part of the South African team.”
