England squad announced for FIFA Women's World Cup - The Guardian

England women's team manager Sarina Wiegman has announced a 23-member squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The mega women's football event is scheduled to be played from July 20 to August 20.

Amid injury concerns, Wiegman completed her work to select the best possible squad for the English team.

Striker Bethany England returned to the squad whereas defender Millie Bright is included despite a recent injury.

The European champions have been rocked by a number of serious injuries, sidelining captain Leah Williamson, Beth Mead and Fran Kirby among others and creating significant selection dilemmas for Wiegman.

On team selection, Wiegman said: "I have huge belief in this squad and we’re very fortunate to be selecting a fantastic group of players to travel to Australia. We know we will face tough challenges from strong teams, and we will have to be competitive from the first match on 22 July.

"We will do everything to be at our very best again this summer. It is important the players get some well-deserved time to rest and recover over the next few weeks before we start the final preparations to get them ready.

"We learned a lot of positive lessons about how to get the players fit, fresh and ready from the Euro last summer and we know what we have to do to make sure we hit the ground running in the right way when the tournament starts."

England, who won Bronze in 2015 World Cup, are placed in group D alongside Denmark and China. They will play their first match against Haiti in Brisbane on July 22.
