Pakistan batting legend Mohammad Yousuf has said that he was close to being appointed the new Under-19 coach before the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) backed out of the deal, Daily Jang reported on Thursday.

Yousuf told the Urdu daily that he had been promised by both the PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani and Director Academies Mudassar Nazar that he was going to be appointed soon.

"I had told the PCB to assign me any batsman who has flaws, but the board dismissed by case," he said.

Yousuf said that the PCB "created a deadlock out of the blue and ended things".

"I am disappointed with the PCB's attitude," Yousuf is quoted as saying by Jang. "The things that the PCB has said about me in the media are contrary to the facts."

Still wants to work with PCB

"Despite this, I am ready to work in the PCB in future," he added.

It remains unclear whether Yousuf was in the running for just the batting coach's role or the head coach, the latter of was eventually awarded to former Test cricketer Ijaz Ahmed.

Yousuf was reportedly offered the U-19 coaching role in May but he had turned it down.

One of the most underrated batting greats of Pakistan cricket, Yousuf averaged 52.29 in Tests and 41.71 in ODIs during his playing career, but the icing on the cake was his superhuman and record-shattering feat of amassing 1,788 runs over 11 Tests in a single calendar year.

He, however, has a history of run-ins with the cricket authorities, which may have kept him from landing a job, which most cricketers of his pedigree seem to bag at will.
