Sheikh Jassim has submitted his revised offer, believed to be more than £5billion, for Premier League club Manchester United.

According to a report by talkSPORT, the world record bid went in overnight.

It must be noted that the world record fee for a sports club was set when the Denver Broncos were sold last summer for £3.75billion.

“Sources close to the Qatari banker believe his is the most competitive offer on the table,” the report stated.

“British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe also submitted a second offer thought to be around £5bn on Thursday.

“Both bidders were given an extension by US bank Raine Group, which is running the possible takeover process, after they failed to meet Wednesday’s ‘soft’ deadline.”

The Glazers, who currently own the club, value the club at £6bn and are unlikely to sell United for less than that figure.

Earlier, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, the 70-year-old Ratcliffe said he would not pay over the odds for the 20-time English champions.

"How do you decide the price of a painting?" he said. "How do you decide the price of a house? It´s not related to how much it cost to build or how much it cost to paint.

"What you don´t want to do is pay stupid prices for things because then you regret it subsequently."

Ratcliffe said his interest is based "purely in winning things", while also naming the club a "community asset", rather than a financial one.

The Glazers, who completed a leveraged takeover of the club in 2005, have proved deeply unpopular with supporters due to the team´s declining fortunes on the pitch in recent years.

Their purchase of United also saddled the club with huge debts and they have long been accused of taking more out financially than they have invested in terms of transfer funds.

The Glazers further angered United fans by backing the failed European Super League project in April 2021 which would have led to the club joining a breakaway competition.

The Red Devils have not won the Premier League title since Ferguson´s final campaign in 2012/2013 and have failed to win any trophy since 2017.

United currently sit third in the Premier League, 19 points behind leaders Arsenal.
