Indian star batter Virat Kohli became the fastest player to complete 25,000 runs in international cricket during the second Test against Australia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Sunday.

Kohli needed 549 international matches to achieve the feat and overtake the legendary Sachin Tendulkar (34,437), who reached the milestone in 577 innings.

In the second session of day three of the second Test against Australia, Kohli joined the lucrative club.

Jacques Kallis reached the 25,000-run milestone in 594 innings, while former Australian captain Ricky Ponting did so in 588 innings. Legendary Sri Lankan players Kumar Sangakkara (608 innings) and Mahela Jayawardene (701 innings) come after Kallis and Ponting.

To set the world record, Kohli simply needed to score 52 runs in the second Test match.

In the second inning, the 34-year-old was out for 20 off 31 balls. Todd Murphy stumped Kohli in the 19th over for the first time in his career.

Earlier, Kohli fell short of recording his 29th half-century in the first innings as he could only score 44 runs off 84 balls.

It is worth mentioning here that India put up a flawless effort on the third day of the Delhi Test to grab a commanding 2-0 lead in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023.

India beat Australia by six wickets, thanks to a seven-wicket haul by Ravindra Jadeja that set a career-high.

The opening session was controlled by India's spinner, who dismissed Australia for 113. With six wickets in hand, the hosts successfully completed the chase.

India now leads the four-match Test series 2-0 and will keep the Border-Gavaskar Trophy no matter how the last two Tests turn out.
