Barcelona manager and Lionel Messi's former teammate Xavi has stated that the doors are open for the Argentina star if wants to return to the Catalan club.

Messi rose through Barcelona's academy system to become arguably the best player to ever step foot on a football field.

Messi's time with Barcelona, however, came to an emotional end in the summer of 2021 after the two parties were unable to reach a contract extension.

When asked about the situation, Xavi said the doors will always be open for the Paris Saint-Germain player if he wants a return to the La Liga side.

"Why not (about the possibility of Messi’s return)? I think it depends on him," he said in an interaction with media.

"What he wants, what he feels. Of course, Barcelona is always Messi's home. Doors will be opened for Leo, especially if I'm the coach here. Let's see what he wants to do. The decision depends on Messi more than the club."

The Argentine took the decision to depart the team after making 778 appearances and scoring 672 goals.

Barcelona are currently enjoying their excellent form as they lead the La Liga standings with 50 points, five points more than their bitter rival and reigning champion Real Madrid.

On the other hand, Xavi admitted that coaching Barcelona is challenging.

"It's difficult to manage Barcelona. We have a lot of pressure. We need to win titles. Fortunately, I know the club and the environment," he said.

"I've been here as a player for 24 years, so I'm proud and honoured to be the coach of Barcelona. I know the pressure here, many people criticise us, but this is Barcelona. I accept this challenge. I'm happy to be here. We need to win titles to avoid criticism."

Barcelona will play Sevilla on Sunday in their upcoming match.
