South Korea's coach Paulo Bento announced his resignation after his side lost to Brazil in the FIFA World Cup 2022 last-16 clash on Monday.

Bento's side was eliminated from the mega event after falling to Brazil 4-1.

In August 2018, the Portuguese was appointed as the coach of South Korea.

"We just have to think about the future, and it will not be with the national team of South Korea. I have just announced to the players and the president of the South Korean federation, and this was a decision I had already taken since September that was set in stone," Bento said after the match on Monday.

"Today, I have confirmed it, and I have to thank them for everything they have done. They have given their very best, and I have been very pleased and proud to have been their manager."

South Korea finished second in Group H and advanced to the round of 16 after defeating his home side Portugal 2-1 in their last group match.

The 53-year-old took South Korea to the round of 16 of a FIFA World Cup 2022 for the first time in 12 years.

Bento didn't mention his future plans but is expected to take a break before moving on.
