England forward Raheem Sterling's future at the FIFA World Cup 2022 remains uncertain after he left the squad due to a "family matter".

The 27-year-old was unable to participate in Sunday's round of 16 game against Senegal.

England’s head coach Gareth Southgate had said that Sterling will deal with the matter but was unsure when the Chelsea striker would rejoin the squad.

"He will go and deal with that matter and we will have to take it from there," Southgate told ITV.

"I had quite a bit of time with him this morning, but I have had to pass that on to other people to help him with that."

In England's 6-2 victory over Iran in their opening group match, the Chelsea forward started and scored before being called upon once more for the 0-0 draw with the United States.

During big competitions, the England manager frequently depended on Sterling; he started each of England's seven Euro 2020 games.

Although the Three Lions have depth in their attack but they will feel the absence of the experienced Chelsea forward.

After making his debut in 2012, Sterling has scored 20 goals in 80 appearances for England.
