SAO PAULO: Amid his long struggle with cancer, football star Pele was admitted to the hospital in Sao Paulo with a condition described as 'worsening'.

The 82-year-old, who is regarded as one of the best footballers of all time, was reportedly admitted to a hospital after experiencing swelling 'all over his body', cardiac problems, and mental bewilderment while receiving cancer treatment that appeared to be useless, according to ESPN Brasil.

He was reportedly 'very restless' when he got to the hospital and physicians who evaluated him also discovered a cardiac condition.

Kely Nascimento, Pele's daughter, gave an update and said there is 'no emergency'.

"Lots of alarm in the media today concerning my dad's health. He is in the hospital regulating medication. There is no emergency or new dire prediction. I will be there for New Years and promise to post some pictures," she wrote on social media.

Pele has undergone chemotherapy for a colon tumour that was found last September and has regularly visited the hospital for check-ups.

Earlier this year, he opened out about his health struggles, revealing that his treatment had been 'difficult,' but adding that he was grateful to be at home with his family.
