DOHA: Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka has sent a message to Germany's protests at the FIFA World Cup 2022 after the international governing body announced punishment for wearing a 'OneLove' armband to support LGBTQ+.

Numerous countries competing in the World Cup have voiced their disapproval of FIFA's rigid position on the issue of players wearing 'OneLove' armbands.

Germany's players protested the decision on the pitch before their World Cup opener against Japan on Wednesday, covering their mouths with their hands.

In light of FIFA's decision, Xhaka feels that players "need to respect the rules".

"I don't think we need to do anything as the Swiss team. We need to respect the rules and concentrate on our football, that's all I intend to do. We're here to play football and not hand out lessons to anyone," the 36-year-old midfielder said.

The Swiss FA voiced their disappointment at FIFA's threats about the OneLove armband despite the fact that Xhaka's remarks explain why Switzerland did not object.

"It's unfortunate because we wanted to spread a message," a spokesperson declared on Monday.

It must be noted here that Switzerland beat Cameroon by one goal in their Group G opener at the Al Janoub Stadium on Thursday.

The European side will next clash with a formidable Brazil side on Monday, November 28.
