KARACHI: Former Aussie captain Mark Taylor has said that Australia should be looking at the next generation when replacing Aaron Finch, who is likely to end his career after the T20 World Cup 2022,  as their T20 captain.

Under his leadership, Australia won the T20 World Cup in 2021, and Finch made a name for himself as one of the game's top white ball openers during this time.

Taylor has indicated that the next Australia captain should not be one from the elder generation and has floated the idea that even guys like Cameron Green could get a look in for the job given that the next T20 World Cup is two years away.

"Australia's next major assignment in T20 cricket is the World Cup in two years time," he said on Wide World of Sports.

"Bear in mind that David Warner will be almost 38, Steve Smith will be 35?, Matthew Wade's probably out of contention because he'll be 36. Looking at replacing Aaron Finch, I think Australia should be looking at the next generation to start rebuilding this side altogether."

Taylor claimed that the team that won the tournament in 2021 was an outdated squad and that the next generation can build on the T20I side to compete in the longer formats of the game.

"We've got quite an oldish T20 side that won last year, I think they've got to be looking at someone like Mitch Marsh, Travis Head if he makes the team, Alex Carey if he takes the gloves, or someone like Cameron Green, who's in and out of the team at the moment.

"They're the guys I'd be looking at to be the leader of our T20 side in two years time. It also gives them an opportunity to have a look at them as leaders, for other formats of the game."
