SAN FRANCISCO: The Golden State Warriors defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 123-109 in the opening game of their NBA title defence, with Stephen Curry scoring 33 points.

The Warriors were led in scoring by eight-time All-Star Curry, who also had 20 points from Andrew Wiggins.

LeBron James led the Lakers with 31 points in the game's last frame. He aspires to break Kareem Abdul-all-time Jabbar's points scoring record this season.

The Warriors were restricted to 25 points in the first quarter after getting diamond-encrusted rings during the pre-game ceremony, but they scored 34, 32, and 32 points in the next three while outscoring the Lakers 48-30 from beyond the arc.

For the winning team, Klay Thompson finished with 18 points, Poole added 12 points and seven assists off the bench, and Curry added seven assists, six rebounds, and four steals.

Despite James' 31-point performance, the Lakers lost their season opener for the sixth consecutive year and missed the 2022 playoffs as a result.
