KARACHI: Portugal faced a major blow on Tuesday as Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed that Diogo Jota will miss the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2022 due to an injury.

The forward sustained a calf injury, which forced him to be stretchered off the field in the final moments of the Reds Premier League clash against Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.

"[It is a] pretty serious injury of the calf muscle. Sad news for the boy, us, and Portugal," Klopp said.

"He's surprisingly OK so far. He's an incredibly smart boy. I think he knew it when we carried him off the pitch."

"We passed each other after the game and he explained pretty much what had happened. I think he knew it was a serious one and could be pretty impactful for his World Cup dreams."

Jota missed the first few games of the season due to a hamstring injury before making his comeback on September 3 in a scoreless draw with Everton.

Later the same month, during the international break, Jota participated for Portugal and scored in a 4-0 victory over the Czech Republic.
