Cricket Australia requests integrity code change to overturn ban on Warner's leadership roles

KARACHI: After demanding a change to their integrity code, Cricket Australia has made it possible for David Warner's lifetime leadership ban to be revoked.

Warner's involvement in the infamous ball-tampering affair in South Africa led to a 12-month suspension from elite cricket and a lifetime ban from leadership roles from the sport's governing body in 2018.

However, there have been calls for Warner to take over as Australia's one-day international captain after Aaron Finch resigned.

The opening batsman had filled in as ODI captain in 2016 and 2017, and he was the Test team's vice-captain at the time of his suspension.

According to existing regulations, every player who accepts a suspension, as did Warner waives the right to have their punishment reviewed. But on Friday, the CA board requested a reform proposal from its head of integrity.

"The amendment would allow a person to request a penalty that they had accepted be reviewed after an appropriate period of time," CA said in a statement.

"The onus would be on the applicant to prove they had undergone genuine reform relevant to the offence they were sanctioned for.

"Any review would not revisit the original sanction, other than suspension of a penalty in recognition of genuine reform."
