MANCHESTER: In an exciting fight, British fighter Joe Joyce defeated New Zealander Joseph Parker's greatest effort to knock out his opponent in the eleventh round.

The heavyweights engaged in a back-and-forth battle before Parker was hit flush on the chin by a powerful left hook.

With his best career victory, Joyce won the WBO interim heavyweight championship. He now plans to challenge heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk in 2023.

After 14 professional matches against inferior opponents, the British fighter's transition to a higher class had been questioned. He just got professional when he was 31 after having a delayed start to his amateur career. He turned 37 this week.

But Joyce displayed a steel chin to defeat Parker, a former world champion, for the first time.

"Joseph Parker... what a fighter and what a fight," he said.

"It was a tough fight and praise to Parker. I really enjoyed it and I had to dig deep to get through the rounds. I hit him with everything I've got, I tried it all and he was still coming forward.

"I managed to drop him at the end but it was hard work. Usyk let's get it on."
