VALENCIA: Spanish teenage sensation Carlos Alcaraz helped his nation qualify for the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup after beating Soonwoo Kwon 6-4, 7-6(1) to move the former champion into a 2-0 lead against South Korea.

In November, Spain will play Croatia, last year's runners-up, in the Davis Cup quarterfinals.

In the round of eight, the Netherlands and the United States, who both defeated Great Britain in Group D of the qualifying round, will play Australia and Italy, respectively.

Canada and Germany will square off in the other quarterfinal round.

At the Martin Carpena Arena, the Davis Cup knockout round begins on November 22 and ends five days later with the championship match.

To advance in the final round of group matches on Sunday, Spain, the 2019 champions, knew they had to defeat the winless South Korean.

Roberto Bautista Agut and Carlos Alcaraz, the world's number one singles player, advanced easily to the round of eight with straight-set victories.

In his first match since winning the US Open, Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada defeated Alcaraz 6-7 (3-7) 6-4 6-2 on Friday.

To advance to the knockout rounds, the 19-year-old defeated Kwon Soon-woo 6-4 7-6 (7-1), and Bautista Agut defeated Hong Seong-chan 6-1 6-3.
