US Open: The winner will take Daniil Medvedev's place at the top

NEW YORK: With a five-set victory over American hopeful Frances Tiafoe in the US Open semifinals, Spanish youth Carlos Alcaraz advanced to his first Grand Slam final.

Alcaraz will compete against Casper Ruud of Norway, who earlier on Friday resumed his own quest for a first major by defeating Karen Khachanov of Russia.

Meanwhile, fifth seed Ruud triumphed 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 5-7 6-2 while third seed Alcaraz won 6-7 (6-8) 6-3 6-1 6-7 (5-7) 6-3.

Whoever wins the Sunday final will go up to the top spot in the men's rankings.

The winner will take Daniil Medvedev's place at the top of the ATP rankings, which he lost to in the round of 16 in Flushing Meadows.
