NEW YORK: Daniil Medvedev's defence of the US Open championship was halted by Nick Kyrgios, who triumphed in an exciting four-set match on a fun night in New York.

The 27-year-old Australian defeated his opponent in the round of 16 with a score of 7-6 (13-11) 3-6 6-3 6-2, showcasing all of his shotmaking skills and penchant for drama.

After losing, 26-year-old Medvedev will no longer hold the top spot in the world.

Khachanov defeated 12-seed Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain through a 4-6 6-3 6-1 4-6 6-3 victory to advance to his third Grand Slam quarterfinal.

"It was an amazing match. Daniil is the defending champion and a lot of pressure on his shoulders, but I've been playing great recently," said Kyrgios.

"People were really starting to doubt my ability to pull out matches like this at majors. I'm really proud of myself because it hasn't been easy dealing with all the criticism."

Kyrgios claimed he has been in some "very frightening areas emotionally" that had slowed his progress but that he had consistently shown over the years that he has the skill to win one of the major events.
