TORONTO: Simona Halep put on a spirited performance to defeat Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia in three sets to win her third Canadian Open championship.
The winner of Wimbledon in 2019 prevailed 6-3 2-6 6-3 to go up to sixth place in the global rankings.
Halep fell from second to twentieth in the world after missing most of the previous season due to injuries.
Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain won the men's competition by defeating Hubert Hurkacz of Poland 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
After dropping the first set on a solitary break of serve, Carreno Busta ranked 23rd in the world, fought back to defeat world number 10 Hurkacz.
