BIRMINGHAM: Local police located two out of three missing Sri Lankan contingent members who reportedly fled from the Commonwealth Games 2022 village on August 1.
A wrestler, a judoka, and a judo coach reportedly went missing from Sri Lanka's contingent comprised of 161 athletes and officials.
Sri Lanka’s National Olympic Committee Secretary General Maxwell De Silva on August 4 confirmed that two out of three missing members were located by the local police. However, their details have been kept under cover.
"In fact, we had contacted the British High Commission but they would not reveal details about the found members," Silva told foreign media.
Reports also claimed that the located members of the Sri Lankan contingent have surrendered their passports to avoid going back to their home country, which is facing an economic and governmental crisis.
After Sri Lankan team members went missing, the Commonwealth Games 2022 management removed documents for all remaining members of the team temporarily.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s sprinter Yupun Abeykoon bagged bronze in Men's 100m on Wednesday. Overall, Sri Lanka has so far bagged a silver and two bronze in the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022.
