Iga Swiatek loses in quarter-finals of Poland Open

WARSAW: Iga Swiatek, the top-ranked player in the world, lost in the quarterfinals of her home event on Friday, snapping her winning streak on clay.

The Polish went 18-0 this season on clay, dropping only two sets while winning the French Open, Stuttgart, and Rome.

However, she was defeated by France's Caroline Garcia, the 45th-ranked player in the world, at the Poland Open, losing 6-1 1-6 6-4.

In the semifinals, Garcia will now compete against Jasmine Paolini of Italy.

The 58th-ranked Paolini overcame a shaky beginning to upset Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland 1-6 6-2 6-2.

In the other semi-final in Warsaw, Romania's Ana Bogdan will compete against Kateryna Baindl of Ukraine.

The victory streak on clay for Iga Swiatek was snapped by Caroline Garcia.
