KARACHI: The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) has penalized Wimbledon's organisers for excluding Russian and Belarusian players from this summer's grass-court competitions.

The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) have each been fined £620,000 for not allowing athletes to compete at Wimbledon and in warm-up events.

The fines have been challenged by the LTA and the All England Club.

Sally Bolton, the chief executive of the AELTC, told reporters on Monday that the organisation is "deeply disappointed" by the tour's reaction.

"I think the first thing to say is that it is the subject of a legal process, so I can't comment specifically on that," she said.

"We stand by the decision we made, we are deeply disappointed at the reactions of the tours to that decision, and I probably can't say anything more on that at this time, I'm afraid."
