BIRMINGHAM: Dayana Yastremska advanced to the quarterfinals of the Birmingham Classic by defeating top seed Jelena Ostapenko.
In a hard-hitting and at times feisty match, the Ukrainian defeated Latvia's Ostapenko 3-6 7-5 7-5.
Yastremska had nine double faults to 14 aces in the final set but came back from a breakdown both times to win.
"We are very good friends and it has been hard to play against her in a personal way as well as a tennis [way]," Yastremska said.
Next up for world number 79 will be Zhang Shuai of China or Elena-Gabriela Ruse of Romania.
It's the first time Yastremska has advanced to a WTA Tour quarter-final on grass.
After her victory, she expressed her gratitude to the Birmingham fans by making a heart gesture with her hands.
Meanwhile, Camila Giorgi, the third seed from Italy, advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-6 7-5 6-2 victory over American Lauren Davis.
