KARACHI: Rana Zaheer Hockey Academy have hired legendary Dutch hockey coach Roelant Oltmans, becoming the first hockey academy in Pakistan to appoint a foreign coach.

Oltmans, who will arrive in Pakistan on 14 June, coached the national team of Pakistan twice, the first being during the Olympic Games in Athens, and held the position until the end of 2004, while the second was in 2018.

Director of the academy Rana Zaheer credited Punjab Sports Board for the appointment of the foreign coach.

"Our academy has been working for 15 years free of cost. Punjab Sports Board has also formed a pool of more than 50 children, who will also be trained by the newly appointed coach," Rana said.

It is pertinent to mention here that Oltmans is one of the most successful field hockey coaches in history, having led the Dutch men to Olympic and World Cup gold medals, as well as their women to a World Cup title.
