PARIS: Ons Jabeur, the sixth seed, was knocked out in the first round of the French Open by Magda Linette.

The Tunisian came at Roland Garros in fine clay-court form but was defeated by the 52nd-ranked Pole 3-6 7-6 (7-4) 7-5.

Jabeur was one of the favourites for the championship, having reached three clay-court finals in the run-up to the French Open.

Linette, on the other hand, kept her cool on the critical points and came out on top.

Linette will next face either Harriet Dart of the United Kingdom or Martina Trevisan of Italy.

Jabeur had won 17 clay-court matches in the weeks leading up to the French Open, and in the Madrid Open earlier this month, he became the first African to win a WTA 1,000 tournament.
