MADRID: Atletico Madrid defeated city rivals and La Liga winners Real Madrid to get closer to qualifying for the Champions League.

Real Madrid made seven changes after their thrilling victory against Manchester City on Wednesday.

Real Betis sits in fifth place, six points ahead of Diego Simeone's team.

The hosts had opportunities to extend their advantage early on, with Angel Correa shooting wide and Cunha having his effort stopped following wonderful work by Antoine Griezmann.

Griezmann and Carrasco again connected well in the box, but the France forward blasted wide of Andriy Lunin's goal, while Carrasco hit the inside of the near post minutes after.

When Vinicius Junior was brought in the second half, Real Madrid improved, and the Brazilian forward's driving run set up a fantastic chance for Marco Asensio, which was blocked.

Substitute In the end-to-end battle at the Wanda Metropolitano, Federico Valverde challenged Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak twice.

Carlo Ancelotti's side have three more league matches before facing Liverpool in the Champions League final on May 28 in Paris.
