KARACHI: Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar was known for his ferocious pace and dangerous bouncers that left some of the world's top batters clueless and many of them sustained injuries due to his nasty short-pitch deliveries.
And on this day, 20 years back, he created a record that further stamped his status as one of the fastest pacers ever to grace the game. He became the first bowler to break the 100mph as he bowled that pacey delivery during Pakistan's ODI match against New Zealand in Lahore in 2002.
He also got a mention from fans as well as the cricketers on Twitter, as Cricket Australia also mentioned it.
"On the day Shoaib Akhtar became the first bowler to break the 100mph barrier 20 years ago," cricket.com.au tweeted.
"We dug into the archives to find perhaps his most ferocious delivery on Australian shores," they added about the video they shared.
Akhtar also informed about that memorable ball as he retweeted on former Aussie all-rounder Shane Watson's tweet.
"I was also just 26. Memorable series, how time flies. Hope you're doing good mate," he wrote.
It should be noted that Akhtar during his injury-prone career, represented Pakistan in 46 Test matches, 163 ODIs and 15 T20Is, and managed to rattle some of the world's top batters with his pacey delivereis.
