AMSTERDAM: Netherlands boss Louis Van Gaal has revealed that he is suffering from prostate cancer and is currently undergoing treatment for the disease.

The Dutchman, on Sunday, made the revelation on the Dutch TV show Humberto.

During the recent international break, Van Gaal revealed he withheld the news from his team.

"I didn't want to tell it to my players because it could have influenced their performances," Van Gaal said, according to BBC Sports.

"In each period during my time as manager of the national team, I had to leave in the night to go to the hospital without the players finding it out until now. While thinking I was healthy, but I am not."

Van Gaal is in his third season as head coach of the Netherlands, having guided them to third place in the 2014 World Cup and now to the Qatar 2022 finals.

Van Gaal guided Manchester United to FA Cup victory in 2016 during a two-year stint at the club before being replaced by Jose Mourinho.

Van Gaal will lead the Netherlands in the World Cup in Qatar in November, when his team will be placed in Group A alongside Senegal, Ecuador, and the hosts.
