PSL 7: Islamabad United appoints Azhar Mahmood as head coach

Azhar Mahmood will replace Johan Botha as the head coach of Islamabad United ahead of PSL 7

Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Islamabad United have appointed former Pakistani all-rounder Azhar Mahmood as their head coach for the seventh edition of the PSL.

Mahmood will replace South African coach Johan Botha as the head coach of the two-time PSL Champions.

Azhar Mahmood has previously served in the PSL as the bowling coach of Multan Sultans and Karachi Kings.

Mahmood was part of the Islamabad United team in the first edition of the PSL, which won the title.

Azhar Mahmood said that Islamabad United and the city Islamabad are close to his heart as he was part of the winning team of the 2016 edition.

"I was part of Islamabad United's title-winning team in PSL 1. The franchise and the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi are quite close to my heart as my hometowns," the 46-year-old said.

Azhar further lauded Islamabad United's efforts for the development of young players.

"United have always paved the way and provided a platform for emerging players, from Shadab to Asif to most recently Wasim, all started their careers here. It is not only a great platform for grooming local players but coaches too," he added.

The former Pakistan all-rounder further added that he is looking forward to working with former Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal who is now the bowling coach of Islamabad United.

"Saeed Ajmal is such an example, and I look forward to working with him this year now that I have taken a new path in my career," he said.

Azhar Mahmood also stated that he intends to share his experiences with Islamabad United players.

"I have played franchise cricket all over the world and I look forward to sharing my experience with the guys at Islamabad United," he added.
