Legendary Indian wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni has batted in the lower middle-order for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

During the match against Punjab Kings on May 5, all-rounder Shardul Thakur strode out to bat while Dhoni remained in the dugout, holding himself back until the No. 9 position.

This decision puzzled experts. Irfan Pathan believed that MS Dhoni's placement so low in the batting order wasn't benefiting CSK. Former CSK bowler Harbhajan Singh suggested that CSK should include an additional batter.

According to a report by The Times of India, Dhoni's choice to bat late isn't a strategic move but rather a necessity due to a leg muscle tear. The report cites unnamed team officials who stated that Dhoni is unable to sustain prolonged running due to this injury.

“We are virtually playing with our ‘B’ team. Those who are criticising Dhoni don’t know the sacrifice that he is doing for this team,” a CSK source said.

The tear reportedly occurred in the early stages of the IPL 2024, and with Devon Conway sidelined due to his own injury, MS Dhoni has been retained. Therefore, Dhoni has been soldiering on despite the pain, relying on medication and reducing his running.

This marks the second consecutive year that he has played through injury. Last year, he grappled with a knee injury that necessitated surgery during the off-season.

While the knee has since fully recovered, the muscle tear is a separate issue but significant enough to hinder his mobility.

In addition to Conway, CSK are currently missing Deepak Chahar, Matheesha Pathirana, and Mustafizur Rahman. Moreover, Dhoni is undoubtedly keen to support Ruturaj Gaikwad as he navigates his inaugural season as CSK captain.
