AHMEDABAD: Maharashtra captain Ruturaj Gaikwad smacked seven sixes in an over, which happened for the first time in List A cricket, against Uttar Pradesh in the quarter-final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy in Ahmedabad on Monday.

Gaikwad achieved the feat in the penultimate over of the innings, which resulted in 43 runs with left-arm spinner Shiva Singh on the receiving end.

The right-handed batter smoked a six on every ball of the over, which included a no-ball followed by a free hit.

Gaikwad’s brilliant innings, which included 220 unbeaten runs off 159 balls, were laced with ten fours and 16 sixes.

Meanwhile, Shiva finished with disappointing figures of 0-88 from nine overs.

Gaikwad’s heroics helped Maharashtra post 330-5 in their allotted 50 overs, with the rest of the batters adding 96 runs from 142 balls.

The 43-run over equalled the joint effort of Brett Hampton and Joe Carter, off Willem Ludick, for Northern Districts against Central Districts in a Ford Trophy game in 2018.

Gaikwad exploits resulted in the 39th double-century in List A cricket, and the fifth-highest score by an Indian in the format.

The 25-year-old has featured in one T20I and nine ODIs for India, over the course of his brief international career, after making his debut in 2021.
